  1. In England, I once met a woman while out shopping in a local supermarket. She was wearing her scarf this way. At the checkout, I asked her if it got in the way when she was talking. She laughed and said, "Yes of course it does but I don't mind". Just to prove her point, as she spoke, the single knot of her scarf slipped into her mouth. I apologised for my curiosity and asked her why she wore it that way. Didn't she find it annoying? She patiently pulled it back down to just below her mouth and said "No not at all - I once saw someone in London wearing her scarf this way and decided I'd give it a go. I always wear it like this now because it feels nice and looks much more elegant than tied under the chin the old-fashioned way. You get used to the little difficulties!" As she spoke, her scarf slipped again, this time it went right up over her lips. "There you are, you see! No problem!" she said, her voice a little muffled by her scarf. I thought she would find all this a bit embarrassing but every time I saw her after that she was always wearing her headscarf the same way. She always seemed to have a lot of trouble keeping it from slipping into her mouth whenever she spoke to anyone at the supermarket checkouts but it never stopped her. This is a true story. The woman's name was Dawn. I used to see her every week out shopping - I don't know what happened to her, this was a few years ago. But she was right - it does look beautiful when a scarf is worn this way, so it really doesn't matter if it's a bit difficult or impractical.
